Tech layoffs are happening all over.
Tons of people are looking for new jobs but also tons of companies are starting to ramp up hiring in the new year.
I have probably interviewed over 1,000 marketers at this point in my career.
Here are the 5 easiest ways to stand out in an interview process, or things to look for when you are hiring:
1) Great Marketers know their numbers inside and out. Whether you are in content, demand gen or product marketing - you should know your numbers and be ready to speak to them. I can’t tell you the amount of times I have been met with a blank stare when I asked questions like close rates of marketing sourced opps.
2) The interview is conversational. A title doesn’t change the fact that it’s still just a person you are talking to. Get comfortable, don’t be afraid to jump in with questions, ask for clarification and show some personality. People want to work with people they like.
3)Ask questions about the companies metrics. If you are interviewing for a Product Marketing role - wouldn’t you want to know what our churn, adoption rates or typical launch metrics look like before you own them? Don’t forget you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you.
4) They have ideas I haven’t thought of. They might be misinformed and that’s okay but almost always a few ideas pop up that are already brewing in their heads of what they would do in the role - and they are not generic or obvious. This shows the person has given some thought to the problems they might face already.
5)Have common courtesy. Back when we had offices - the amount of people who would just leave the dirty coffee cup on the table, or not be friendly to the front desk was mind boggling. Thank people for their time, follow up with thank you notes. Be a decent human - the little things matter a lot.
Good luck out there!
"They have ideas I haven’t thought of." Shows proactivity and engagement. Somebody you can trust to take over things and make them better, or is willing to challenge you.
