This is the #1 hack to improving as a marketer in 2023…
STOP listening to marketers and their hacks.
In fact stop listening to other marketers period.
One of the biggest problems with sites like Twitter and Linkedin is they have become a cesspool for bad marketing content.
Every other post is a thread on how someone killed it and their playbook (Available for only $59).
Or a generic piece of advice like “Talk to your customers.”
Are we really getting better as marketers consuming content like this?
So why don’t we try something different this year Instead. Get out of the echo chamber.
- Read books that aren’t business books.
- Follow people not talking about marketing.
- Pick up a hobby instead of a side hustle.
I bet your perspective to marketing will change and it will help your campaigns stand out from the sea of sameness. What’s the worst case - you become an interesting person?
Not sure where to start? Here are some of my favorite non marketing content out there today:
Weekend Guide - weekly newsletter of Pictures/Music/Words with a focus on recommending a new book each week 📚.
Stillnotes - A weekly photography newsletter sharing an image and the story behind it.
StickyNotes - weekly emails riffing on advertising and writing and creativity and life from poet / copywriter.
Process - a weekly newsletter about photography, finding your voice and digging into the more philosophical aspects of photography.
“Stay inspired. Chase the spark.”
