Everyone is in the middle of 2024 planning right now. Building out their revenue models. Determining their sales and marketing targets. Building comp plans.
But most will skip the most crucial part of ensuring any of those goals are actually hit- planning their rituals around the goals. The ritual is actually what matters most when it comes to achieving any goal, yet companies spend almost 0 time focused on it.
A far too often common scenario is: goals are picked, built out in spreadsheets and then not looked at until the end of Q1, except by maybe a few people. So what happens along the way is distractions come up, other projects take priority and before you know it the team is focused on things that aren't rolling up to the main goal.
So, why do rituals matter so much?
Think of rituals as the steady beat in the background. They help keep us on track and make sure our goals don't just get lost in the shuffle. Instead of goals being 'out of sight, out of mind,' rituals make sure they're part of what the team does every day.
Here are the rituals I have had the most success with when it comes to keeping a team focused on a goal:
The Weekly Check-In: Every Monday morning, gather your team for a brief 30-minute meeting. Use this time to review progress to the goals, address challenges, and remind everyone of the goal. It serves as both a touchpoint and a motivational kickstart to the week.
No Meeting Day: Dedicate one day a week where no meetings are scheduled. This allows team members a clear stretch of time to focus solely on tasks and projects that align with the goal. It's a day for deep work, free from the interruptions that meetings can often bring. It’s important that this time is actually respected by everyone.
Monthly Calibrations: Understandably, in a start-up external projects and unforeseen challenges will arise. Designate a day each month to refocus though. Use this day to audit the projects completed last month, review how the team spent their time and what is scheduled for next month. This will help you reprioritize, eliminate distractions, and steer back on course if needed.
Quarterly Reviews: Instead of waiting until the end of Q1 to look back, proactively schedule quarterly reviews. Be brutally honest about what worked, what didn't, and realign your strategies if necessary. This is a meeting where the ego, feelings and emotions need to be tabled - the sole focus is on giving you and the team the best chance to achieve the goal. That can only happen if you are completely honest about what is going right and wrong. It keeps the goal alive and the path clear.
Don’t let this be another year where your goals just die on a spreadsheet.
